Welcome to the October edition of the IPM CPD Mail, the monthly one stop shop for all your CPD requirements. Published on the 3rd Monday of each month, the CPD Mail contains links to IPM accredited CPD resources as well as events, enabling you to accrue CPD points on a manageable month by month basis.

Each CPD mail contains links to exclusive new CPD opportunities, as well as a round up of other resources which you will have had chance to access already. We are currently allocating codes to all our resources on an ongoing basis (including the Journal of Place Management & Development and key readings), therefore each month the list of additional CPD opportunities will be added to. EVENTS

RUDI conference 3rd December (360 points available)

The second of RUDI’s Re-Making Places events will be held in London on 3rd December 2008. Entitled ‘Unlocking Potential: Finding the right solutions to today’s economic, social and environmental challenges’, the event will play host to a number of speakers including Nick Wates of Communityplanning.net and Richard Rees, director of the urbanism group at BDP.

The event will provide approximately 6 hours of learning and development, equating to 360 CPD points.

This month's Bulletin includes news of a smoking ban in India which is causing unusual problems for businesses, we have some interesting public realm themed news including a new scheme which has stripped a city centre road of all its signage and markings, and a study which claims that when it comes to urban design, it really is a man's world. In addition we have a report on Blackpool's attempts to regenerate following their super casino disappointment and the final part of our oil series which this month looks at how transport and employment are being affected.

CPD Mail Resource – RUDI podcast: Re-making places for 21st century challenges(60 points available) Professor Michael Hebbert, Manchester University

RUDI's first Re-making Places event took place in February 2008 and brought together a range of views on the theme of remodelling and re-engineering places. Michael Hebbert, Professor of Town Planning, School of Environment and Development, University of Manchester & Editor of ‘Progress in Planning’, looked at techniques for designing and re-designing urban and suburban areas for 21st century challenges. CPD Mail Resource – European City Brand Barometer (60 points available)

This study, entitled ‘The City Brand Barometer’ and created by London-based Saffron Consultants, ranks 72 of Europe’s largest cities based on a comparison of their assets and attractions against the strength of their brands. To support the analysis, Saffron commissioned a YouGov poll of 2,000 consumers to find out what people most want from a city. The paper makes for interesting reading and can be accessed through the Waterfront Expo event page below (the link to the report PDF itself can be found at the bottom of said page).

RUDI Place Making Document

HOW TO BANK YOUR CPD POINTS

STEP 1 - To bank your CPD points, log in to the E-Academy area of www.placemanagement.org.

STEP 2 - Click the link on the left hand menu entitled ‘Bank your CPD’.

STEP 3 - To verify that the CPD activity being banked has been fulfilled, you will need to answer three set questions concerning the given CPD activity. You will be granted three opportunities to answer all three questions correctly, answer incorrectly three times and you will be blocked from banking points this CPD resource.

STEP 4 - If the CPD activity being banked is an event, you will also be requested to answer some short questions concerning the quality of the session itself.
